An MCP server exposes tools and data (search product data, fetch cases, trigger actions via APIs) that an AI client can use with the right permissions and guardrails. The standard is open and was created by Anthropic.
For product companies it's a strategic difference: plugging in a chatbot isn't enough — the product needs an architecture where AI can use the right data, the right tools and the right guardrails.
